Materials used in External Wall Insulation

Different insulation materials are used in external wall insulation systems for keeping your house warm. The essential properties of the insulation materials include high heat resistance and low heat conductivity. These insulation materials form a barrier and prevent heat from escaping from the walls.

Natural or synthetic insulation materials may be used in Hulmurs isolering. Commonly used synthetic insulation materials include fiber glass, rock wool and foam. Fiber glass and rock wool are cheaper alternatives and they have relatively low R values. This means that thicker layers are required for effective insulation.

Foam insulation material is available in two forms – a rigid board or spray foam. Both forms have high R values. Spray foam insulation is accomplished by injecting or blowing the foam into the wall. Spray foam insulation is also ideal to sealing any crevices, cracks or holes, anywhere in the house, which is causing heat loss. In such cases, spray foam insulation does not require professional assistance. You can do it yourself, following the instructions.

Natural insulation materials include materials like flax, cellulose and recycled newspapers. Though effective insulation providers, they are prone to forming fungi and need to be replaced every few years.
